Josep Maria Xarrié (1943-2013)

1962

Josep Maria Xarrié (Barcelona,1943-2013) began his career in 1960 as an art conservator at Museu d’Art de Catalunya (actually MNAC), where his father, Domènec Xarrié, had already became a painting conservator in 1929. So Josep Maria was acquainted with this discipline before he had his bachelor in Fine Arts (Universitat de Barcelona, 1967), two years later, he lectured on art conservation at Universitat de Barcelona until 1986.

In 1972 he won a scholarship to study mural painting conservation taught by Laura and Paolo Mora at the International Center for Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).

Six years later, he became a UNESCO consultant and taught lectures in República Dominicana, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala and Brazil, for instance, in CECOR.

Then in 1981, he received the request to found the Governmental Art Conservation Institute (Generalitat de Catalunya), so he was the founder and director from 1981 until his retirement in 2009. For thirty-two years, he managed the conservation treatment of more than eighteen thousand pieces from public catalan museums and churches. Below pictures from the conservation center:
